Legal & Political Considerations for Safe Spaces: Supporting All Members of the Campus Community In-Person

Overview: Colleges and universities across America are creating safe spaces on campus. These spaces are a place where members of the LGBTQIA community and other marginalized groups can feel safe to express their ideas and opinions without the fear of ridicule, judgment or threats to their personal safety and well-being. Critics of safe spaces say that safe spaces infringe upon academic freedom and constitutional rights, and should not be permitted on any college campus.

Join Claire K. Hall, J.D. as she explains the controversies that have arisen on college and university campuses about the creation of safe spaces and offers solutions for navigating this very complex issue.

Objectives:

  • Understand what a safe space is and how and why colleges and universities are creating them on campus
  • Discover what an institution’s obligations are to protect free speech and whether safe spaces infringe upon that obligation
